Mt. McKinley Was OUT!

And it was outstanding!!

sunny 60 °F

What a fabulous day today was! We rode the shuttle into the tiny town of Talkeetna for our float trip on the Talkeetna River. It was two hour long and just beautiful. We saw eagles and ducks and beautiful foliage. One of the eagles was standing guard near his huge nest. We ate high bush cranberries and boy are they tart. Lots of dead salmon along the river, as well. We were even serenaded by a local with his guitar as we floated on by.

Lunch was in the Twisted Creek Restaurant and it was so beautiful we were able to eat outside!
After lunch Shirley took a flightseeing tour of Mt. McKinley. By the afternoon the mountain was totally out and we were all just amazed! We stood on the shore of the river and watched the clouds move until the mountain was in view. It seems that most people don't get to see it when they are here, so we are very lucky!

While Shirley was flying the men and I were exploring the town. The town of Talkeetna is tiny, one main street with a few side streets running off it. There are quite a few restaurants and gift shops, but most of them are getting ready to close for the winter. The season ends here on September 20, when the last Princess ship sets sail.

Mt. McKinley

Wasn't out ;(

overcast 52 °F

Our luggage was picked up at 6am and we boarded our coach at 9 am for our journey north. It was a three hour ride through Wasilla, where Sarah Palin lives, Willow, where the Ididarod begins, to Trapper Creek, where we are staying.

The weather today has been less than beautiful, with clouds all day, a little rain and a high temp of 52. Tomorrow should be better.

Night in storage before Alaska

We are in Alaska!! This is so cool, I can hardly stand it! Our flight from Seattle was fine (if you have to fly), and we arrived about 10:30 Alaska time, which is one more hour after Pacific, so four hours from Eastern.

The day was beautiful. We had a Princess bus just for the four of us to our hotel in Anchorage. We checked in and then went downtown for lunch.
After lunch we took a Trolley Tour of Anchorage and learned all kinds of stuff. (Sorry, Justin and Collins, we did it again!). In 1964 there was a 9.2 magnitude earthquake here that shook everything for 5 minutes!! An entire section of the town dropped about 15 feet. The streets were actually rolling. We went to the National Park Visitor Center and saw a documentary on the earthquake with actual movie footage. It was quite devastating.
Did you know that Anchorage is the Floatplane capital of the world? Now you do! It seems that 1/4 of all the floatplanes in the world are right here in Anchorage! Who knew?

We were hoping that Mt. Mc Kinley would be out in the afternoon, but it did not clear up enough for that. We did find a statue of Captain James Cook right next to the Cook Inlet. It appears that the good captain was all over the globe. After discovering Hawaii, he was still looking for an inside passage and came all the way up to this area and discovered Anchorage, as well. Busy man, he was.

As tourists we are required to do some shopping, so we did, but only a little. There are many more places that we will be able to shop :)
When we left Seattle the temp was 47 in Anchorage. I think it went up into the 50s, but it was really a gorgeous day, with clouds and sun.

The Next Adventure

sunny 60 °F

We finished up our packing, did some last minute shopping and put the campers into storage yesterday. We even spent the night in the storage area! Dry camping at it's best!
We are sitting at the Seattle Airport waiting to board our flight to Alaska right now. If you know me well you are probably wondering how I can manage to write this in the state I am in. Me too! I actually took drugs this morning. I hope it helps.
Next post from Alaska! It's been a long time coming and we are very excited!
Pictures tonight I hope.

We packed up and took the 10 am ferry back to the mainland. It was another smooth and beautiful crossing! Don and I picked up our camper in Surrey and we all headed home to the USA!

Unfortunately it wasn't as quick as we had hoped. It took us 80 minutes at the border crossing due to traffic. Neither of us had any problems, though.

It was only about 95 miles back to Everett, so an easy trip.
Ryan had recommended a new camera for me to look at, so I did and I bought it! It's a Nikon, step up from point and shoot, but not SLR. Should be a good test for it in Alaska!
Today we started getting things ready for the cruise. We did haircuts, laundry and packing. So much fun;(
The weather continues to be beautiful, with sunny skies and temps in the 70s!
